learn icelandic: icelandic vocabulary
This site had been slumbering peacefully in one of the obscurest corners of the web when suddenly, just the other day, b2 in Iceland linked to it on its front page under the title: Stelpa sem er að læra Íslensku. Traffic surged, amazingly -- from the average one or two stray visitors a week, to nearly 2000 a day, for a peak of 36 hours or so, now receding (at a mathematically interesting rate.) Talk about 15 minutes of fame (for a website as well as for a human) -- talk about a freak gust on the long sail! Freakish enough for Google Adsense to filter out its ads, so I couldn't catch any money on the surging tide, and the roughly one per cent of the Icelandic population which stormed through my site. Anyway, some things are more important than money -- for example, establishing community. And with the unexpected exposure this site received, I felt somewhat embarrassed, because of its shabbiness and incompleteness of the site, the bad photos and many mistakes and shit. Since I never really expected many people to visit here, I didn't really care about the bad formatting and the general lack of br and p breaks. In fact, I had even thought of deleting the site, deeming it of little use for anybody. But useful it must be, otherwise 3000 surfers wouldn't have come here, in the space of two days. The tsunami of guests got me wondering: maybe this site has a future after all. And maybe I could even expand the focus from learning the Icelandic language, to learning the Icelandic mind and the Icelandic soul as well. From the outside in, in preparation for my next trip to Iceland in 2009. When I go to Iceland next year and meet people there and they ask me what my blog address is, I will give them this URL. Stelpa sem er að læra Íslensku.

The thing you have to note is this site (like all my other ones) is a work in progress. It is mesnt to be incomplete. When I started the project in 2005, I wrote: "I want to catalogue my progress as I go on this Uncloned World website, and provide some resources to help other Icelandic students. However, since I don't have the energy and patience and time to produce a full-on language tuition site, I decided instead a cool thing to do would be to compile a huge vocabulary list -- and phrase sets -- covering every aspect of Icelandic life. There won't be much emphasis on grammar here, much less pronounciation. Instead there will be list after list of Icelandic words that are important and not so important, as well as set piece phrases you could use in writing or a conversation, and little blurbs about contemporary Icelandic culture. This database is intended to slot into other guides I am developing about Iceland, such as my Reykjavik city guide. If you want to look for a particular word or phrase or entire subsection of grammar, check out the links below."

ADVERBS
As was written on Wikipedia: "Compared to other lexical categories, Icelandic adverbs are relatively simple, and are not declined, except in some cases for comparison, and can be constructed easily from adjectives, nouns and verbs. These derived adverbs often end in -lega (approximately equivalent to the -ly suffix in English):
nýr—new ... nýlega—lately
Note: The adverbs ending in -lega can be declined for comparison, which makes a rather large group on its own. Exempli gratia:
hætta—danger ... hættulega ... hættulegar ... hættulegast, i.e. dangerously ... more dangerously ... most dangerously.
This is a regular way to form adverbs. Another way is to take the neutral nominative singular of an adjective and turn it into an adverb:
blítt—gentle ... blítt—gently, cf. hún sefur blítt—she sleeps gently.
heit—hot ... heit—hotly, cf. hvt augu stara mig heitwhite eyes stare at me hotly.
Another way is taking the stem of an adjective and add an a:
illur—bad ... illa—badly, cf. hann hagar sér illa—he behaves badly
Like in English, very many common adverbs do not stick to these patterns but are, so to speak, adverbs in their own right:
bráðum—soon
núna—now
oft—often
strax—right away
The basic adverbs of direction include, among others:
austur—east
norður—north
suður—south
vestur—west
inn—in
innan—from within
utan—from outside
út—out ... inn og út—going in and going out.
loksins—finally, cf. Loksins erum vi enginn.

There seems to be a similarity between the Icelandic "set" (deposit) and the English "set" (for example, "the concrete has been set on the ground.") In fact, I suspect that "set" is an original Indo-European word. Here are some Icelandic words using "set" somewhere inside of them:

ORDINAL NUMBERS
One. . . Eitt (neutral/nominative), eitt (neutral/accusative), einu (neuatral/dative), eins (neutral: genitive.)
Now, let us consider the example "einni viku." This came from a Red Cross website, which claimed: "Fimm milljón börn bólusett gegn mislingum á einni viku." As you can see above, "einni" is the feminine dative form of "one". This is the cool thing about Icelandic -- you can infer from this use of "einni" that "viku" must be a feminine noun, and that something is being given to it.
Similarly, from Google searches, we could assume that "jörð" (Earth) is a feminine noun, due to the high number of entries Google has llsted for the words "einni jörð".

GRAMMAR
DATIVE CASE
The dative case is a grammatical case generally used to indicate the noun to whom something is given. The name is derived from the Latin dativus, meaning "appropriate to giving." The thing being given may be a tangible object—such as "a book" or "a pen"—or it may be an intangible abstraction, such as "an answer" or "help." The dative generally marks the indirect object of a verb, although in some instances, the dative is used for the direct object of a verb pertaining directly to an act of giving something.
Good Old Norse list here!

Icelandic-English Connections
The Icelandic word for "accident" (óhapp) can be compared with the modern English word "mishap". In Old English, hap meant lucky -- thus óhapp means "unlucky".
